Homeschooling vs. Unschooling
Homeschooling has often had a negative or rather “mysterious” connotation. We are often skeptical of the things of which we are unfamiliar. Language is a funny thing. If we think about it, “homeschooling” is literally learning in the home which is what generations have done before “public schools” were created. Why do we now think that our children are not learning unless they are in a “school” environment? As humans, we are ALWAYS learning. We are always seeking knowledge.
In recent years, it seems more families are jumping into “homeschooling” because the conventional school system is not working out for them. The interesting thing is, as homeschoolers we are still working under the same concepts as traditional schools but just “teaching” it ourselves. This is a misconception and I, too, am wrapping my mind around how to approach a more my child-focused love of wonderment in the world. I love this article by Dayna Martin, the Mother of Radical Unschooling. I hear great things about her book, Raising Rebels. And, now that I am looking through her website, I might just want to get all three of her books!
Here’s to being brave and learning something new about unlearning!
