Belinda’s unwavering conviction that children deserve the agency to pursue their passions was a true catalyst for my own transformation as a parent. Her words haunted me but I kept up the 'good fight' with the school system and my struggling child as the stress level in our house grew. I pulled my son out of his charter school and put him in an on-line web academy, 'That would solve the problem!' I lied to myself. Finally I did the unthinkable and pulled my son out of school! He is finishing his GED at the community college, he landed two part-time jobs in the field he wants to pursue (auto racing) and he is excelling beyond my dreams! My biggest regret was waiting. I know it's terrifying to escape the schooling matrix but it has been the best thing for our family and my son. Do not wait like I did. We followed the traditional school path because it’s what we thought was right. But even as a young child, my daughter struggled with anxiety, overstimulation, and pressure—despite being a great student. By second grade, she was having daily meltdowns.
We tried a Waldorf school, which helped temporarily, but the stress returned. I had been gently suggesting homeschooling for years, but our daughter was a social child who loved her classmates. Then one day, she began to question the system herself. She wondered if her teachers were even inspired, and asked what real-life skills she was gaining in tenth grade.
Around that time, Belinda shared her own story—how she chose to let her daughter step off the traditional path and follow her passions. It was scary to even consider breaking free of the societal box we were in. But looking back, my husband and I only wish we’d done it sooner.
